I hate to admit that when I saw the American Express ad with the brown lab puppy and the making of the bone shaped pancakes, I loved it. And I knew I wanted to make bone shaped pancakes for my dog too, but with some different ingredients — all dog friendly of course.
Growing up, my mom liked (and still likes) Krusteaz pancake mix. I also admit that the mix makes great pancakes but I think making pancakes from scratch is just as easy. And you have a decision on what ingredients you are going to include. I like to experiment with pancakes and different kinds of flour. You can do that with this recipe too. Maybe substitute a 1/4 or 1/3 cup of almond flour, a cup of rye flour, more oats. Throw in some honey, chopped dark chocolate bar, and flaky sea salt (just for humans ;). Substitute buttermilk for the soy or almond or coconut. Butter or coconut oil for the olive oil. Go crazy and don’t forget to give your sweet pup a bite.
Pupcakes - adapted from Food52 2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup rolled oats 2 cups soy milk 2 eggs 3 tablespoons olive oil Mix eggs, soy milk, and olive oil in a big bowl. Add oats and let sit a few minutes so the oats absorb some liquid. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder and stir till just combined. Cook pancakes on skillet. To make the dog bone shaped pupcakes, grease a bone shaped cookie cutter. Place on hot skillet. Spoon in a a few tablespoons of batter. When bottom is brown, flip cookie cutter over and push the pupcake down so that the uncooked side is against the skillet. When cooked through, remove pupcake from cookie cutter.
